Overview
Having in-house diagnostic imaging means we can provide fast, accurate diagnoses without the delays and stress of referral appointments. Our modern digital X-ray and ultrasound equipment allows us to investigate a wide range of conditions and get answers quickly.
At TKVets, we can perform most imaging procedures the same day, discuss the results with you immediately, and start appropriate treatment without delay.
X-Ray (Radiography)
X-rays are excellent for examining bones, lungs, heart, and detecting foreign objects. Common uses include:
- Investigating lameness and fractures
- Assessing arthritis and joint problems
- Evaluating heart and lung conditions
- Detecting foreign objects that pets have swallowed
- Screening for hip and elbow dysplasia
- Checking for bladder stones
- Dental radiography for tooth root assessment
Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses sound waves to create real-time images of internal organs. It's particularly useful for:
- Examining abdominal organs (liver, kidneys, spleen, bladder)
- Investigating vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain
- Detecting tumors or masses
- Pregnancy diagnosis and monitoring
- Assessing heart function (echocardiography)
- Guiding biopsies and fluid samples

Frequently Asked Questions
When might my pet need an X-ray or ultrasound?
Imaging may be recommended for diagnosing injuries, investigating lameness, evaluating internal organs, checking for foreign objects, monitoring pregnancy, or assessing ongoing conditions like heart disease or arthritis.
Is imaging safe for my pet?
Yes, both X-rays and ultrasound are safe diagnostic tools. Digital X-rays use minimal radiation exposure—much less than older film X-rays. Ultrasound uses sound waves with no radiation at all, making it completely safe.
Will my pet need sedation?
Most pets can have X-rays and ultrasounds without sedation. However, if your pet is in pain, very anxious, or we need very precise positioning, mild sedation may be recommended for their comfort and to get the best quality images.
How quickly will I get results?
We review digital X-rays and ultrasound images immediately and discuss findings with you during the same appointment. For complex cases, we may send images to specialist radiologists for a second opinion, which typically takes 24-48 hours.
What's the difference between X-ray and ultrasound?
X-rays are best for bones, lungs, and detecting foreign objects. Ultrasound is better for examining soft tissue organs like the liver, kidneys, and heart. Often we use both techniques together for a complete picture.
