Frequently Asked Questions
What types of surgery do you perform?
We perform a comprehensive range of soft-tissue surgical procedures including routine neutering operations, lumpectomy for mass removal, foreign body removal from the digestive tract, bladder stone surgery, dental surgical procedures, and wound repair following injuries or trauma. We also handle various other soft-tissue surgeries as required. Complex orthopaedic cases requiring specialised bone surgery, advanced imaging, or extended intensive care are referred to specialist veterinary surgeons who have additional training and facilities for these procedures.
Is surgery safe for my pet?
Modern veterinary anaesthesia and surgical techniques are extremely safe when performed with appropriate protocols and monitoring. We conduct thorough pre-anaesthetic health checks, including blood tests when indicated, and use advanced monitoring equipment throughout every surgical procedure to track vital signs continuously. Comprehensive pain management is provided before, during, and after surgery. Whilst all surgical procedures inherently carry some degree of risk, we take extensive precautions to minimise these risks and ensure the safest possible outcome for your pet.
How long is the recovery period?
Recovery duration varies depending on the specific surgical procedure performed and your pet's individual healing response. Most routine soft-tissue surgeries require approximately 7-10 days of rest with restricted activity and exercise limitation, followed by suture removal after 10-14 days if non-dissolvable sutures were used. More complex procedures may require longer recovery periods. We provide comprehensive, detailed after-care instructions tailored specifically to your pet's procedure, ensuring you have clear guidance throughout the entire recovery process.
Will my pet be in pain after surgery?
We employ multi-modal pain management protocols to ensure your pet remains comfortable throughout their surgical experience and recovery period. This comprehensive approach includes pre-operative pain relief administered before surgery begins, pain medication provided during the surgical procedure itself, and take-home pain medication for continued comfort during recovery at home. With appropriate pain control measures in place, most pets are surprisingly comfortable following surgery and show minimal signs of discomfort whilst healing.
Can I stay with my pet during surgery?
For important safety and sterility reasons, pet owners cannot be present in the surgical theatre during procedures. However, you're welcome to stay with your pet in the consultation room until they're ready to receive their pre-medication sedation. We'll telephone you immediately after the surgery is complete to update you on how everything went and discuss the procedure outcomes. You can then arrange a convenient time to collect your pet once they've recovered sufficiently from the anaesthetic.
